- Beni Makhan Mosque and Cistern (7th-9th centuries): Also known as the Juma Mosque, this site is located in the center of ancient Gyaur Kala. The mosque’s beautiful architecture is complemented by an intact cistern that still serves its original purpose today, highlighting the advanced engineering techniques of the time.
- Muhammad Ibn Zeid Mausoleum (12th century): A prominent Sufi shrine, this mausoleum is known for its simplicity and elegance. The Arabic inscriptions carved into its walls reflect the spiritual and intellectual influence of Sufism in the region.
- After completing your tour of Old Merv, you will return to Mary for a visit to the Mary History Museum, which is housed in an elegant marble hall. The museum features six main exhibition rooms, each displaying a range of artifacts from Turkmenistan’s ancient and modern history. The collection offers valuable insights into the region’s past, spanning prehistoric times through to the Middle Ages and beyond.
Following your visit, you will be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Ashgabat, arriving in the evening. Overnight in Ashgabat.
Start your day with an early morning flight to Dashoguz, located 570 km away (approximately 50 minutes). Upon arrival, your guide and driver will meet you at the airport and drive you to Kunya-Urgench, the ancient capital of the Khorezm Empire. The drive is about 120 km (approximately 1.5 hours). Kunya-Urgench is home to some of Central Asia’s most impressive historical sites, and your tour will introduce you to several of them:
- Tyurabek-Khanym Mausoleum (14th century): This mausoleum, the burial site of a Mongolian princess, is an example of the grandeur and sophistication of 14th-century Khorezmian architecture.
- Sayid Ahmed Mausoleum (14th century): This tomb is dedicated to a leader of the Golden Horde, adding another layer to the region’s complex history.
- Kutlug Timur Minaret (11th-13th centuries): Standing at 62 meters tall, the Kutlug Timur Minaret is the tallest minaret in Central Asia. Its towering presence is a testament to the region's architectural prowess during the medieval period.
- Sultan Tekesh Mausoleum (12th century): This mausoleum is dedicated to Sultan Tekesh, the ruler of Khorezm, and offers a glimpse into the power and prestige of the Khorezmian dynasty.
- Kyrk Molla Hill (Forty Mullahs Hill): This fortress covers three hectares and is home to the famous Mamun Library (8th-9th centuries), an ancient center of learning, as well as a historic cemetery believed to have healing powers.
- Fakhreddin Razi Mausoleum (13th century): One of the oldest and most unique structures in Central Asia, this mausoleum is dedicated to the philosopher and scholar Fakhreddin Razi.
- Mausoleum of Najmaddin Kubra (12th century): This is the final resting place of the founder of the Kubrawiya Sufi order, and it remains a revered pilgrimage site for Muslims.
- Sultan Ali Mausoleum (16th century): An unfinished structure that was meant to be the tomb of a powerful Turkmen ruler, the Sultan Ali Mausoleum provides insight into the turbulent times during which it was constructed.
- After your exploration of Kunya-Urgench, you will embark on a journey to the Darvaza Gas Crater, located in the middle of the Karakum Desert. The drive is approximately 270 km (4 hours), including an 8 km journey across the sand dunes. The Darvaza Gas Crater, also known as the "Door to Hell," is one of the most mesmerizing natural phenomena in the world. This 80-meter-wide and 30-meter-deep crater has been burning continuously since geologists accidentally set it on fire in the 1970s. The sight of the fire raging in the vast desert is a truly surreal experience.
Upon arrival, you will set up camp near the crater and enjoy a delicious meal prepared over the open flames, immersing yourself in the magic of the desert night. As you sit by the fire and gaze into the glowing depths of the "Door to Hell," you will witness the desert’s ancient landscape in a completely new light. Start your day early with the mesmerizing sunrise over the desert landscape. As the first rays of light illuminate the vast Karakum Desert, enjoy a traditional camp-style breakfast before continuing your journey through this remarkable land.
- Before departing from the Gas Crater, take a detour to visit two other fascinating craters nearby. One is a mud crater, where a bubbling, viscous liquid churns below the surface, offering a unique and surreal sight. The other is a water crater, filled with stunning turquoise water that contrasts beautifully with the barren surroundings. These craters are natural wonders, giving you a glimpse of the extraordinary phenomena the desert holds.
- After your desert exploration, begin your drive back to Ashgabat, covering approximately 275 km (4 hours). En route, you will stop at Erbent Nomadic Village, one of the last remaining nomadic communities in the desert. Here, you will have the chance to learn about the traditional Turkmen lifestyle, gaining insight into the customs, practices, and daily life of the nomads who have lived in harmony with the desert for centuries.
- Continuing your journey through the sand dunes, you'll make stops along the way to capture the beauty of the desert with photos of the majestic sand dunes and the camels that roam this vast landscape. These stops provide the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the tranquility and solitude of the desert while also capturing some stunning images.
