Previously known as Taldy-Kurgan until 1993, Taldykorgan serves as the administrative center of the Zhetysu Region in Kazakhstan. According to the 2010 Kazakhstan census, the city’s population is 143,407. The city traces its origins back to the 19th century when it was established as the village of Gavrilovka. Over time, it evolved into the modern city situated on the same site. Initially, growth was slow, but the completion of the railway brought an influx of Russian farmers to the area. Today, Russians constitute the second-largest ethnic group after Kazakhs among the 70 nationalities residing in Taldykorgan. Previously, Taldykorgan served as the capital of the Taldykorgan Region from 1944 to 1997 and of the Almaty Region from 1997 to 2022. In a reorganization announced by President Tokayev on March 16, 2022, and effective from June 8, 2022, Taldykorgan became the capital of the newly created Zhetysu Region. As part of the same decree, the capital of the Almaty Region was moved to the city of Kunayev. During World War II, Taldykorgan became a temporary refuge for thousands of evacuees from the western parts of the Soviet Union. Women and children from southern Ukraine managed to escape by ship to Novorossiysk and then traveled further inland by train to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
