Ashgabat, Mary, Merv, Kunya-Urgench, Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent

The Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan Tour is a unique journey that combines two contrasting but incredibly attractive destinations in Central Asia. Uzbekistan, known for its historical monuments and cultural heritage, and Turkmenistan, a country still relatively unexplored by tourists, form the perfect pair for a combined trip. These two countries share a similar climate and a common border, making visiting both a convenient and logical choice for travelers. Moreover, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan offer a variety of landscapes, unique cultural features, and historical monuments that guarantee unforgettable experiences for visitors.

During the 11-day Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan Tour, you will cross vast deserts by train and car, visiting historic cities such as Nisa, Kunya-Urgench, and Merv, whose mysterious ruins attract travelers eager to uncover their secrets. Meanwhile, Bukhara, Khiva, and Samarkand will enchant you with their medieval architecture, narrow Old Town alleys, and the rich Uzbek culture. Begin and end your journey in the capitals — Ashgabat and Tashkent, where lush parks, cozy restaurants, and clean, shaded streets will refresh and inspire you.

Arrival in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. A driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel, where check-in starts at noon. Meet your guide and driver for a city tour, which will include the following highlights:

  • - Old Nisa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of the Parthian Empire, founded in the 3rd century BC and existing for nearly 500 years.
  • - Turkmenbashi Ruhy Mosque, the largest mosque in Central Asia, also known as the Spiritual Mosque and the Gypjak Mosque, which includes a mausoleum housing the tombs of former President Turkmenbashi and his immediate family members.
  • - Arch of Neutrality, a 95-meter-high tower with a golden statue of former President Saparmurat Niyazov (Turkmenbashi) on top, which rotates to always face the sun. Take a funicular ride to the top to enjoy panoramic views of the city.
  • - Independence Park, featuring the yurta-shaped Independence Monument, which houses the Museum of National Values. The park is surrounded by grand fountains, statues of key historical figures of Turkmenistan, and a golden sculpture of Niyazov himself.
  • - Statue of Lenin, unique because it stands on a large base decorated with traditional Turkmen ornamentation.
  • - National Museum of History, which displays over half a million items, including rare artifacts from ancient times through the Middle Ages.
  • - Gulistan Bazaar (also known as the Russian Bazaar), one of the oldest markets in the city, a lively and clean place where you can buy snacks and mingle with locals.

After the tour, return to the hotel. Overnight in Ashgabat.

Early flight from Ashgabat to Mary (370 km, 40 min). Upon arrival, your guide and driver will meet you to drive to Merv (40 km, 40 min), an ancient trade center on the Great Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your sightseeing tour in Merv will include:

  • - Gyaur Kala (3rd century BC), Merv’s second oldest settlement, famous for its thick 2-kilometer long walls.
  • - Beni Makhan Mosque and cistern (7th-9th centuries), also known as the Juma Mosque, located in the center of ancient Gyaur Kala with an intact cistern still in use today.

  • - After completing the tour of Old Merv, return to Mary to visit the Mary History Museum, housed in a marble hall with six main exhibition rooms displaying artifacts from ancient and modern times.

After the tour, transfer to the airport for the evening flight back to Ashgabat (370 km, 40 min). Overnight in Ashgabat.

Go through border formalities and cross the 1.5-kilometer (approx. 1 mile) neutral zone. The journey will pass through some of the most picturesque and remote areas of Central Asia, immersing you in the atmosphere of the ancient caravan routes.

Arrive in Bukhara in the afternoon, where your driver will meet you at the station and take you to your hotel. Alternatively, you can opt for a private car and driver; the road takes 7 hours and also passes through the Kyzylkum Desert.
