A hole 230 feet wide has been burning for over 50 years in Turkmenistan’s vast, scorching Karakum Desert, near the village of Darvaza. Officially known as the Darvaza Gas Crater, locals call it the “Gates of Hell.” Its fiery glow can be seen for miles around.

In 1971, a Soviet drilling rig accidentally broke into a massive underground natural gas cavern, causing the ground to collapse and the rig to fall in. As a result, poisonous gas began leaking at an alarming rate.

To prevent the spread of toxic fumes, geologists set the crater on fire, expecting it to burn out in weeks. However, the fire has been burning continuously ever since.
