This 4K Walking Tour takes us to the fairytale winter wonderland Safed Dara in Tajikistan.
Hello and welcome to Safed Dara,
Today is January 7, 2024.
The temperature is 0° C.
Exactly 8 years ago today, this attraction was inaugurated.
There is a location in Tajikistan where you may enjoy the snow to your heart’s delight, despite the common belief that the sun shines there year-round.

There is actual winter on the high peaks. There’s chilly, fresh air, dazzling snow, and breathtaking views. We are referring to Safed Dara, a well-known ski resort.
“Safed-Dara” is a well-liked ski resort in Tajikistan that attracts both domestic and international visitors. The word “Safed-Dara” translates to “White Gorge” in Tajik.
The resort is situated in the Varzob district’s Takob town, around 70 kilometers from Dushanbe. Situated on the southern flanks of the Gissar ridge, the location benefits from a climate that delays the melting of snow until almost summer.
When the ski area was opened in 1976, it was known as “Safedorak.” It did not, however, appear by accident. The truth is that the Soviet Union’s leadership gave geologists a significant assignment: locate a location in the mountains where people could take winter vacations and sportsmen could engage in sports. This land was discovered in the vicinity of Dushanbe in 1975, which marked the start of the resort’s growth.
Safedorak hosted winter sports competitions, USSR national team training sessions, and New Year’s holidays. Additionally, the Olympic Reserve’s first ski school in the Tajik SSR was established.

The ski resort was almost devastated with the fall of the Soviet Union and Tajikistan’s independence; it operated intermittently on weekends and with frequent disruptions.
In 2010, the Tajikistani administration made its first statement regarding the necessity of reclaiming the Safed-Dary area. We required foreign investment for this. Naturally, a number of nations expressed interest in the resort, but they were afraid to start restoration because of the project’s 20-year payback time. As a result, the initial bid was rejected.
Summer 2015 saw the start of work after a major Tajik developer won the re-tender. And thus, Safed-Dara reopened in December following the completion of the initial repair project.
The formal inauguration of the ski complex took place on January 7, 2016, with the attendance of the Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Kohir Rasulzoda.
In 2016, the ski resort’s modernization efforts proceeded. Thus, work on one of the CIS’s contemporary cable vehicles started in May.

The “Safed-Dar” cable vehicle was constructed using the same blueprints as the Olympic cable car in Sochi. It takes about 7 minutes to reach the top plateau, which is located at an elevation of 2600 meters. In an hour, it can move up to 2,000 people.
The typical weekly attendance at the ski resort is roughly a thousand people, with weekend attendance reaching up to 2,500 and holiday attendance reaching up to 3,000. Of course, the bulk are inhabitants of Dushanbe.
Thus, you can spend unforgettable New Year holidays at one of the winter resorts in Central Asia and give yourself a sea of pleasant memories because winter in Safed Dar will have a national oriental flavor.
