Can You Pay with a Credit Card in Uzbekistan?

Many travelers ask: can you pay with a credit card in Uzbekistan, or do you need cash? The answer is yes. However, it depends on where you go.

International cards are becoming more common in Uzbekistan. Visa and Mastercard work in many hotels, restaurants, large shops, and supermarkets. Some tourist businesses also take these cards in Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara.

However, cash is still very important in Uzbekistan. Small shops and local restaurants often take cash only. Many traditional bazaars also take cash only. Street taxis usually require cash. Rural areas may also have limited card options. Keep some Uzbek soum (UZS) with you.

ATMs are now easy to find in major cities and airports. Many ATMs take international cards and let you withdraw Uzbek soum. Visa works in more places than Mastercard in many parts of the country. This can vary by bank and location. Some banks and ATMs may also charge a fee.

The best choice is to carry both a credit card and some cash. This gives you more freedom during your trip. In this guide, you will learn where credit cards work in Uzbekistan, whether Visa and Mastercard work, how ATMs work, and how much cash you should carry.
