Big Almaty Lake is situated 28.5 kilometers south of Almaty in the valley of the Bolshaya Almatinka River, at an elevation of 2511 meters above sea level.

It is encircled by mountain peaks on all sides and sits in a depression that resembles a shimmering mirror. Sovetov Peak (4,317 m), Ozerny Peak (4,110 m), and Turist Peak (3,954 m) are the three main peaks rising above the lake. From the northern end of the dam, they are visible. The 3,681-meter-tall pyramid known as Big Almaty Peak is visible from the city center and lies on the ridge to the west of Tourist Peak.

The glacier-fed lake is a bowl of 1.6 km in length, nearly 1 km in width, and 40 m in depth. The lake’s hue changes with the seasons, from a light green to a turquoise blue.

The magnificent domes of the Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory (2 km from the lake, at a height of 2,700 m) are visible from a settlement in the valley above the lake. Furthermore, Komostaniya, located next to the Zhasylkezen pass at an even greater elevation of 3,300 meters, is a place where you can spend the night gazing up at the stars.

The nearest mountain lake to Almaty is Big Almaty Lake, which is a part of the National Park. The trip from the city to the lake is 23 kilometers long. There is a gravel road that leads to the Ile-Alatau National Park, which requires a minor entrance fee if the road to the hydroelectric power station is paved.

Because of the lake’s elevation, it remains chilly here in July, with water temperatures rarely rising over 8 degrees. This does not deter the “Ivanovites,” or supporters of Porfiry Ivanov’s movement, who fearlessly submerge themselves in ice water throughout the winter months in order to revitalize their bodies and fill them with restorative energy.

Mudflow experts state that this lake has endured the tests of nature to this day, but climbing into the gorge itself is extremely dangerous due to the possibility of mudflows.

The Great Almaty Gorge is a popular tourist destination and a landmark in and of itself, drawing large numbers of visitors each year.

The photos taken with the help of the man-made satellite “Orbita” beautifully depict the Great Almaty Gorge, with a multitude of trees and contemporary dwellings strewn like little dots on either side.

About six kilometers from the city’s edge, the road suddenly shifts. Here the paved road splits off.

The road on the right will open the Alma-Arasan Sanatorium in front of you, and the center road, which is the longest, will take you to the lake.

From the river’s source towards the eastern slopes, an extremely steep path leads to Big Almaty Lake. The route appears to be enclosed by stone walls. The lake is fed by and receives water from the Bolshaya Almatinka River.

Surrounding the lake are elements of very natural and distinctive beauty, including rocks, glacial deposits, slopes, and serene Tien Shan spruce trees.

A bridge spans the lake and leads to Lake Issyk-Kul, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most breathtaking locations. Many choose to hike to the lake in spite of the challenging route and steep hills, taking in the breathtaking scenery and the gentle mountain air.
