Mountain Lake Issyk-Kul: Pearl of Kyrgyzstan

At a height of 1609 meters above sea level, Issyk-Kul is a tectonically formed mountain miracle lake devoid of ice. It is situated in a deep intermountain depression between the Terskey-Ala-Too ridge and the spurs of the Kungey Alatau. The lake is shielded by mountain ranges from the north’s chilly air and the south’s scorching desert breeze. As a result, the temperature is pleasant and warm; neither intense heat nor hard frosts occur here.

Issyk-Kul, the second-largest mountain lake in the world after Lake Titicaca in South America, is one of the biggest and most exquisite alpine lakes in the world. It is 170 km in length and 70 km in width. Since the lake’s maximum depth is 700 meters, the water warms up unevenly throughout. Because the northern massifs are shallower than the southern ones, the water in the Cholpon-Ata area warms up three to four degrees more than it does elsewhere. The water temperature in the vicinity of the Tamga resort on the southern coast is not higher than twenty degrees.

“Issyk-Kul” translates to “holy, reserved lake” from the ancient Turkic language and to “warm lake” (it never freezes) from Kyrgyz. In reality, the lake is well-known for its large coniferous woods, alpine meadows, pleasant beaches, and thermo-mineral radon springs, despite its elevation. Despite the lake’s deeply carved coastline, there are roughly twenty lovely bays.

It is renowned for having therapeutic qualities as well. A resort vacation with extra options for mud and thermal therapy is made possible by the crystal-clear water, mineral springs, and a moderate, nearly marine climate that is found in the mountains. There are about eighty rivers that enter the lake, but none that exit. The lake is brackish in this sense (its salinity is 5.8%), and its overall salinity is around 10 billion tons of different salts. As a result, since ancient times, people have come here to enhance their health in addition to unwinding on the shores of a natural phenomenon.

This lake is like a pearl, lost among the high, snow-capped mountains. Lying on the shore of a warm lake, it is very difficult to believe that somewhere opposite, on the neighboring five-thousander, there is eternal snow. And if you get tired of just sunbathing and admiring the extraordinary beauty of this protected area, you can hike along fascinating mountain trails or try yourself as a fisherman and catch local trout (locals say that sometimes it can reach 35 kg!). And don’t be alarmed if, while walking along an untrodden path, you suddenly meet a lynx, wild cat, wild boar, bear, or even a snow leopard—these animals have lived here for centuries. And in winter, the lake is home to swans, geese, ducks, and cranes.
