The Issyk-Kul region in Kyrgyzstan is famous not only for the incredible beauty of its nature. There are places in this area where you can feel as if you are in a completely different world. Thus, on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, near the village of Tamga, there is the amazingly beautiful “Skazka” Canyon.

If you look at the canyon from the roadside, it seems to be quite ordinary and unremarkable place. However, after walking a few kilometres, the landscape, unimpressive at first sight, changes into a stunning view that opens right before your eyes.

The formation of the canyon took millions of years. Winds, water and geological processes have had a major impact on the sand and clay, giving them different shapes. The natural elements have decorated the slopes of the canyon with bizarre patterns and transformed the red rocks into original sculptures.

This name “Skazka” which is translated “Fairy taile” was given to the canyon for a reason. The thing is that walking through the labyrinths of the canyon and looking around, the imagination begins to draw on its reliefs various images of fairytale characters, fantastic creatures and incredible buildings, plunging into a fairytale world.

When the sky is clear and the sun lights up the canyon with its bright rays falling on its slopes, the red colour starts to shimmer in different shades. When the weather is overcast, a completely different picture can be seen in the same spot.

The Canyon is a natural landmark. However, it is only recently known as a natural wonder. There are no myths or legends about this place, as the fertile soil was the main factor for the people who lived here many years ago.

It is advisable to visit the canyon when there is no heavy rainfall, as the soil, consisting of sandstone and clay, becomes barely passable due to rain.

When visiting the canyon again, it is difficult to see the same landscape. The reason for this is strong winds and heavy rain.

Also in this area you can visit the Chinese Wall canyon, which is about five kilometres long.

No matter where you are on holiday in Issyk-Kul, you won’t have any problems finding a tour to the Fairy Tale Canyon. The length of the tour is usually one day. You only have to pay for the fare on off-road vehicles, and the entrance to Skazka is completely free.

Walking around the canyon and seeing the local beauties not only gives you an aesthetic pleasure, but you also get to connect with nature. Most visitors can walk for hours through the labyrinths of the fairytale world, trying to feel the spirit of this enigmatic canyon ‘Skazka’. And after the walk, you can go straight to the local Lake Issyk-Kul and take a swim, washing off the road dust.
