The city is magnificent and stunning from above. The Baiterek complex, located in the city center, represents Kazakhstan’s development both spiritually and culturally. There are several towering structures nearby, including apartment complexes, hotels, and office buildings.
There are high-rise residential neighborhoods surrounding the city center that appear quite uniform and well-kept. Certain sections are embellished with geometric designs, including semicircles or rings.
Although the city is modern and new, certain characteristics of Kazakh culture and customs are still there. For example, the city is replete with squares and parks where you may see decorative elements and the flags of the country.
The city’s remarkable attractiveness is further enhanced by the surrounding stunning natural scenery, which includes hills and lakes, as a result of its location in the steppe region. This is especially true when viewed from above.

In 1961, when Kazakhstan was still a part of the Soviet Union, the Akmola region had Akmolinsk as its capital. The city started to aggressively grow during this time; several new buildings and structures were constructed, and new residential areas were starting to be established.
Following Kazakhstan’s independence in 1992, Akmolinsk grew to be one of the nation’s major cities. The city was officially renamed Astana in 1997, and it was designated as the republic’s capital.
In honor of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the country’s first president, the city was renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019. Today, Nur-Sultan is Kazakhstan’s major political and economic hub, a modernist metropolis with a high degree of infrastructural development and several architectural landmarks.
