We departed the lovely city of Ashgabat early in the morning. The Darvaza gas crater is located in the Karakum Desert to the north of Ashgabat. The gas crater is roughly 275 kilometers from Ashgabat. Similar depressions of the size of the gas crater can be found along the route.
This is a rainwater-filled crater, not a burning one. The sunset in the Karakum desert was breathtakingly gorgeous as we drove along a desolate road. We arrived at a gas crater early in the evening. One of Turkmenistan’s top tourist destinations is the gas crater in the Karakum desert.
The Karakum Desert contains the gas crater Darvaza. It is situated in Turkmenistan’s Dashoguz province, roughly 90 kilometers from the settlement of Erbert. At roughly 60 meters in circumference and 20 meters in depth, its size is astounding. This location is sometimes referred to as the “gates of hell” or the “door to the underworld” by both locals and visitors.
In 1971, Soviet geologists found a large subterranean gas field in the Turkmen SSR, close to the settlement of Darvaza. The higher soil layers fell as a result of their unintentional discovery of an underground vacuum during investigation and drilling. The ensuing deep hole was filled with gas, and the drilling rig, equipment, and transport fell into it.
Fortunately, human casualties were avoided. Assuming that the fire will extinguish in a few days, it was decided to burn them to stop the emission of toxic fumes. But the prediction proved to be inaccurate. Furthermore, the GAS in the crater has been burning nonstop, day and night, since 1971.
Anything that plunges into this flaming pit will unavoidably stay there. It is condemned to contain living things. The diameter and depth of this humming and radiating heat crater are around 60 and 20 meters, respectively. From its depths erupted hundreds of burning gas torches. In certain locations, the flames can reach heights of 10 to 15 meters.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the current president, visited the crater in 2010 and gave the order to find a solution to either remove it or make sure it doesn’t get in the way of the development of nearby gas fields.
The Darvaza crater was included in the state nature reserve that was created in the Karakum Desert three years later, in 2013.
In November 2013, George Karonis, a Canadian researcher, made his first scientific descent to the crater’s bottom. He found that certain bacteria can endure extremely high temperatures. These creatures inhabit a closed environment within the heated crater and are unique to Earth.
The Darvaza crater and its environs are now popular tourist destinations. In an effort to draw in foreign tourists, Turkmenistan’s governmental tourism committee started advertising it in 2014. Two additional sinkholes that formed for similar reasons are located close to the flaming crater.
Since the gas pressure is far lower here than in the main crater, there isn’t an open flame. There is light gray bubbling mud at the bottom of one of the sinkholes. The liquid at the bottom of the other is a vivid shade of turquoise.
According to experts, directional drilling through denser rock strata might potentially access two of the region’s three gas resources.
Given their relatively shallow depth, it appears that the gas reserves here are of industrial significance.
The remnants of wellhead fittings have been maintained in a number of mothballed wells located close to the flaming crater. However, more gas extraction is not feasible in the region of the turquoise lake, where the gas layer is already in contact with water.
