Itinerary

You arrive in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.

Today we will visit the historic complex of Khast Imam in the Old Town. In the large square you will see the Tilla Sheykh Mosque, the Barakkhan Madrasa, the Mausoleum of Kaffal Shashi and the library, which houses the oldest Koran in the world. Then we go the Chorsu Bazaar which was already well known in the Middle Ages that lies at the crossroads of the caravan processions of the Great Silk Road. In the afternoon, we will wander through the modern town and on the way visit Independence Square and Amir Timur Park. Afternoon flight to Urgench. Transfer to hotel on arrival - Khiva.

Day 3 :
Khiva

To the Ichan Kala («the inner town citadel» of Khiva). This looks back on a rich history and today it looks as historical as it did centuries ago. It is one of the few preserved places in Central Asia where one can imagine life as it was in Khan’s time. The famous buildings of Central Asia which have long become landmarks are to be found in Ichan Kala (UNESCO-World Heritage). The summer palace Nurullabay is outside Ichan Kala and was built by local master builders and German Mennoniten.

Awesome trip through the vegetated desert of Kyzylkum («red sand» – desert) and the vast steppes to Bukhara (480 km). On the way, we shall make a lunch break in an Uzbek «roadhouse» resp. tea-room. We reach Bukhara in the late evening, and you then have time to discover the Old Town on your own.

Day 5 :
Bukhara

Trip to the burial place of Ismail Samani. Then we will visit the Mausoleum of Chashmai Ayub. Then wander around the old town on foot. You will think you are in the world of One Thousand and One Nights. It is amazing that teaching and learning still takes place in the mosques and madrasas just like it did hundreds of years ago, for instance in the Madrasa Miri Arab. You can admire the «classic» architectural complexes of Lyabi Khauz with its trading domes and mosques, madrasas and the dervish monastery of Khanaka in the town centre and will understand the title «noble town».

Trip to Bukhara via Shakhrisabz. There we will see the ruins of Amir Timur’s summer palace –Ak Saray, the mosques Khazrat Imam and Kok Gumbaz as well as the Dar us Saodat complex. Samarkand was in fact the capital of Timur’s empire, but Shakhrisabz was his place of birth. Seeing this place will give you an idea of the might of Timur’s empire. Then on to Samarkand, arriving late afternoon.

Day 7 :
Samarkand

In the morning you will visit the Bibi Khanum Mosque, which was once considered to be one of the greatest sacred buildings of the Orient. Then we will go to the Siyob Bazaar and on to the Ulugbek Observatory, once the largest research centre in Central Asia, and the necropolis Shakhi Zinda, which translates as «living king», where Timur’s family members are buried.

In the morning we visit a silk paper manufacturer in the Koni Gil quarter. There you will learn about the production of Samarkand paper. You will have lunch in a beautiful local restaurant. Transfer by bus to Samarkand Train Station where you willtake a fast train to Tashkent.

Trip to the Uzbek-Tajikborder. Cross the border, onto Khudjand. Town tour in Khudjand: Visit to the Mosque Shaikh Muslihiddin and the Oriental Bazaar (one of the largest bazaars in Central Asia).

Day 10 :
Khudjand

Another town tour of Khudjand, visit to the archaeological museum (in the middle of the old fort), Lenin Monument, Khudjandi Monument and Arbob Palace. Visit to the Kayrakkum Reservoir and a brief walk.

Accommodation: Khujand Delux Hotel in Khudjand

Trip to Istaravshan. Visit to the Mug Tepa, Khazrati Shoh complex, Khazrati Shoh mausoleum, Khudayar Valami mausoleum, Namozgoh mosque, town cemetery and town mosque, and the Oriental Bazaar. After a lunch break, on to Dushanbe.

Day 12 :
Dushanbe

Town visit to the capital of Tajikistan –Dushanbe. Then see the national antique museum, the Botanical Gardens, the Somoni Monument, Stroll Rudaki prospect. After lunch we visit the Hissar Fort, Medrasa Kuhna (16th century), Tajik Museum, Medrasa and Mausoleum of Mahdumi Azam.
